London Councils - sustaining sustainability

London Councils recently commissioned CAG Consultants and Impetus Consulting to undertake research to better understand how London boroughs are delivering on sustainability and climate change, and to identify the good practice that will enable boroughs to continue to deliver efficiency, effective sustainability and climate change programmes.

Our recommendations for innovative ways the London Councils could respond to the threats and pressure they face and take advantage of the opportunities that the sustainability agenda presents included:

Income generation (e.g. from energy management and advice) and securing external funding.
Shared services including shared officer posts.
Enhancing opportunities for securing external funding, for example by allocating dedicated officer time for developing applications, working with others from within and without the organisation to maximise fundraising expertise, generating income, creating partnerships to enable the borough to be eligible for different funding criteria and considering non-conventional.
